What we score

How the scoring works

This tool applies 11 signals compiled from cold email deliverability studies and open-rate benchmarks published by HubSpot, MailChimp, Pipedrive, and independent SDR research (2023-2026). The score is not an open-rate prediction. It is a structural quality check that flags things a good subject line usually gets right and things weak subject lines usually get wrong.

Length: Cold email subject lines perform best between 30 and 50 characters. Below 20 characters often reads as low-effort. Above 50 characters gets truncated on mobile clients (where over 40% of B2B emails now open first).

Spam triggers: We check against a list of 100+ phrases that spam filters and B2B buyers both flag as promotional. Words like "free," "guarantee," "act now," "click here," and "urgent" are the biggest offenders.

Personalisation: Subject lines using merge tokens tied to real prospect data (first name, company, industry) consistently outperform generic subject lines. The tool checks for the most common token formats used by Smartlead, Instantly, Apollo, HubSpot, and others.

Structural signals: Questions open a curiosity gap and tend to lift opens. Numbers add specificity. All caps and excessive punctuation trigger both spam filters and buyer suspicion. Fake "Re:" or "Fwd:" prefixes damage brand trust and are heavily penalised.
